I agree with your description, but as far as "How we got here" I have a different take. My position is that the focus of raising money by the Democratic Party has led to a party that more reflects its donor base than the average American. The average American is more conservative than the national Democratic Party and it's a shame. Would you be interested in a Democratic Party that returned to its true roots? One that emphasized local control (and local responsibility)?

Good point. Absolutely agree agree the Democratic party does not reflect its base. If it were John F Kennedy's Democratic party, would that be its true roots? Though it was the Democrats who supported slavery.

I would say no, Kennedy sacrificed states rights for civil rights-- and his death carried LBJ (and the nation) to cement those rights in the Civil Rights Act. Not trying to argue that wasn't the right choice for that time-- but we are in different times and it seems if the Democratic party got a little more democratic we'd open the tent back up.

Okay, so who would you say was a ‘democratic’ president? And what changes do you mean by get ‘a little more democratic’?

When a say get more democratic, I'm aiming from the ground up-- I'm commenting more about the centralizing of power and [in general] at the expense of local control. To the extent that the presidency controls agencies that are performing functions better carried out by locals, it should step back-- regardless of who's in the oval office. I'm not here to rank presidents, but more to discuss how we got here and how we get out. That's what attracted me to your article. My belief is that today's technology and isolation is damaging emotional maturity and it's manifested in our politics. That decreased maturity, marked by our [general] distrust in one another is standing in the way of our best version of our country-- our best US. I've got a couple of articles published on Substack I hope you'll check out-- and comment on ;-)

Absolutely agree local politics should be stronger! What the federal government controls tends to go to ‘hell in a hand-basket’. I found your articles and will read. Thanks for pointing that out.
