Hi friends,
This is pretty new and will not be an overnight fix, and like many of President Trump’s policies, it’s a path for improvement and success. It seems the beef supply will begin to increase in about 2 years. The BRAND and SPUR initiatives provide assistance for ranchers to be able to raise more cattle, but you can’t rush Mother Nature. It takes a couple of years for those calves to grow into cows. (Please pardon my city girl ignorance of the details.)
USDA has begun rolling out its new Ranchers First Initiative, along with a program called SPUR (Strengthening Processing for U.S. Ranchers). The effort appears aimed at some of the underlying problems in the beef market—not just today’s retail price.
Among the goals: rebuild the U.S. cattle herd, preserve and expand small and regional American-owned beef processors, encourage new processing cooperatives, increase competition, and make it easier for ranchers to get their cattle to market without being so dependent on a handful of huge processors.
There’s also a new insurance initiative called BRAND designed to encourage ranchers to keep more young females for breeding rather than send them to slaughter. That may mean tightening our belts a little longer—fewer cattle entering the beef supply today so those heifers can produce calves and help rebuild the American herd for tomorrow. Like growing a business, sometimes increasing future capacity requires giving up some immediate return. It also helps ranchers bear the financial risk of making that long-term investment. A strong domestic food supply is worth thinking beyond next month’s grocery bill.
Interestingly, Glenn Beck raised the processing problem directly with President Trump on August 26. Trump seemed genuinely interested and said he would look into the regulations and concentration in the industry. Five days later, USDA announced the broader Ranchers First Initiative.
This is very early. Some pieces are operating now, while others get up and running.
With beef prices where they are, this is something worth knowing about and watching.
